Bush Praises Success of Surge, Leaves It Up To Iraqis

Iraqi Child

This week's new outburst of violence, bombing and death in Iraq has certainly put a damper on President Bush touting the effectiveness of the troop surge which he so adamantly was praising as “undeniably successful” just a week ago on the 5 year anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq. This new onslaught of violence, however, according to the president, falls outside the scope. He instead leaves it up to Iraq to deal with while pledging continued support.

Whatever support we're giving, it seems not to be living up to the “successfulness” made about the surge in Bush's statements earlier in the week. Only a few days afterwards, the violence began to mount as mortars began flying and violence spread throughout Basra, Sadr City and even Baghdad, which is currently on lockdown.

It can, of course be expected, that there will still be bouts of violence throughout Iraq. So is it simple irony that it happened to break out so vehemently after Bush made his speech about how well the troop surge had worked? Some people are asking why it even matters, stating that “Bush administration has lost all credibility” - like this headline headline by the Concord Monitor. So is this a sign that the surge has in fact not worked as well as we've been hearing? Or is it a limited interruption that you'll watch during the news break on your favorite sitcom? At this point, it's anybody's guess, but one thing is for sure... (video on main story page)

Finally, Someone Got It Right ? Iceland's Torrent.is v SMAIS DISMISSED!

David V. Goliath

In a time when David v Goliath seems to only be racking points up for the bullying giants, David has finally scored a point that gives us hope that justice will eventually begin to prevail. Not only did the Icelandic court dismiss the case of SMAIS v Istorrent ehf, but the plaintiff was actually ordered to pay the court costs for the defendant.

It is always important to make clear, piracy is illegal. However, it is also important to point out that in almost every instance, copyright holders and their representatives go after the torrent and P2P networking sites rather than those breaking laws themselves. While these sites are used in large part for the trading of illegal or pirated digital goods, they also help to distribute movies through software like Azureus, who is no suing cable companies who break up torrents as it is interrupting their business which is 100% legitimate. Cross your fingers on that one too.

This is a tactic by companies like SMAIS, MPAA and RIAA to cut the problem off where it starts, sometimes through using bullying tactics like they did with torrentspy.com, suing them into submission until...

Growing Up With Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart

When Comedy Central first introduced “The Daily Show” twelve years ago, I don't think anyone had any idea that their injection to the American public of political satire would end up being a true voice of the people and a source for their political and world news. I have to admit, Jon Stewart is one of my favorite entertainers. But has he brought something to the world of media and media coverage that has been lacking for years? Has he brought upfront and pointed discussion back through civilized discourse with some of the most notable people involved in things like the war with Iraq and the upcoming election?

If you, like me, were a viewer way back when, you can remember the show when it was not much more than a hugely comical half hour of the show's first host, Craig Kilborn, and then in 1999 Stewart's witty banter about all things political. Jon is a quick thinking, sharp tongued word smith, who I would be sure to lose to in the arena of debate. Over the course of a decade, however, there has been a subtle change not only to the show but to Stewart himself. Those of us in his generation and above recognize it. We call it “getting older.”

I don't know if Mr. Stewart thought 9 years ago that he would be an icon...
